The weight of the fabric usually tells us which season the fabric belongs to. For Hong Kong climate, we can classify fabric weight as follow:

Below 7 oz (230 grams)  – Summer Season

8-9 oz (260-280 grams) – Four Season Fabric

Over 10-11 oz (300-310 grams) – Autumn Season

Over 13 oz (340 grams) – Winter Season

Having said that, sometimes we also need to look at the composition of the fabric, for example, Irish Linen can be 370 grams but we still consider it as a summer fabric.

The super value or “S” value of fabric refers to the degree of fineness of the fabric. The higher the number, the finer and lighter the fabric will be. It is also almost true that the “s” value is correlated with the value of the fabric.

The “S” value is just one of the criteria when choosing fabric for your garment but should not be used as the most important element in your decision-making process.

Fabric comes in different compositions, it can be 100% Wool, 100% Cashmere, 100% Linen, 100% Cotton or in mixed nature such as Wool-Silk-Linen, Wool-Cashmere, Wool-Mohair etc.

Composition is an important factor when choosing fabric for your garment as each fibre or yarn has its own characteristics and hence produce different textures, appearances and functions for each type of fabric.

A fabric weave refers to the way wrap threads are interwoven with the weft yarns.

It is also the weave that determines the fabric’s functional and aesthetic properties.

The most common weaves are Plain Weave, Twill Weave and Satin Weave.

Based on the fibre, yarn, structure and finish, fabric comes in all different kind of bodies and surfaces, which we refer it as Fabric Texture.

Textures may be rough or smooth, coarse or fine, crisp or clingy, soft or stiff, thin or bulky, opaque or sheer, shiny or dull, heavy or light or any combination of these characteristics.

It is also the texture of fabric that create different aesthetics of the garment.

Choosing patterns and colours can be tricky. Apart from your personal preferences, you should also take time to understand your body type and skin colour tone.

There are always some patterns and colours that look better on certain body type and vice versa, we should always avoid those choices that make us look less appealing.
