When it comes to wedding attire, the first thing that most customers will ask is whether they should dress in formal wear. How should we define and classify formal wear in classic menswear?
First and foremost, formal wear in the official menswear language does mean wearing a tailcoat in the old days, and dinner suit used to be classified as semi-formal. However, in modern menswear language, we have included dinner suit (or tuxedo) in the formal wear category.
The most formal dress code for men is White-Tie, followed by Morning Suit, Dinner Suit and then Lounge Suit. Both White-Tie and Morning Suit requires a tailcoat whereas all other form of suits are styled in a short jacket.
As White-Tie and Morning Suit represents the 2 most formal dress code for men, they are relatively uncommon to be seen in modern wedding ceremonies or banquets even in western countries. Whereas Dinner Suit (or Tuxedo) has taken the lead as the most common formal wear to be worn by the groom and guests during a wedding banquet.
Another popular choice for wedding attire in lieu of a dinner suit is a 3-piece suit. Many customers found a rather low usage for a dinner suit apart from their wedding day and therefore prefer a more practical option of wearing a tailored 3-piece suit which can be used for many other occasions other than for wedding. The most popular colour is dark navy and light grey.

Black-tie is a formal attire which should be worn only when the event requires for such dress code. Like other formal wear, Black-tie has a specific setting and the most common colours are black, midnight, dark blue and occasionally an ivory dinner jacket. It also comes in the form of a velvet dinner jacket (also refer as a smoking jacket) with more colour options such as dark green, burgundy or even bright orange (as featured in Kingsman).
Black-tie attire comes in both classic setting or modern setting (which sometimes may refer to creative Black-tie.) For the classic setting, the dinner suit should be matched with a white dinner shirt and a black bowtie whereas in creative Black-tie setting, there is no specific rules applied.
The most common occasions to wear Black-Tie include wedding banquets, company dinners, social events and special private parties.
